Haryana has achieved significant reduction in maternal mortality ratio: Aarti Singh Rao

Chandigarh: Under the leadership of Haryana Health and Family Welfare Minister Aarti Singh Rao, the Health Department has achieved a remarkable milestone in maternal health. According to the latest sample registration system (SRS), special bulletin (2020-22) on maternal mortality in India, maternal mortality in the state (MMR) 106 (2019-21) has come down to 89, a notable 17-point improvement.

Health Minister Arti Singh Rao said that this achievement reflects the state’s continuous efforts to strengthen maternal health services. The deficiency implies that about 300 more mothers were saved during this period due to concrete efforts of the medical and health workers dedicated across the state.

The Health Department is committed to further reduce MMR, with the final goal of reaching the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs), reach the target of less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 living births per 100,000 living births.

He said that many major measures have been implemented to increase the quality and access of maternal healthcare. All government distribution points have been modernized and now they are fully equipped with drugs, equipment and logistics required to ensure safe and respectable delivery experiences. The number of first nominated referral units (FRUs) enabled to perform C-section has increased, which ensures timely obstetric care. In addition, the systematic identification and management of high -risk pregnancies is being done through HRP guidance note. A monthly campaign to screen and support high -risk pregnancies, the security Janani month (SJM) is being run to quickly detect and improve the intervention.

Regular reviews at the state and district levels, with one-to-one maternal death audit, are helping to guide data-operated interventions and policy reforms.

Speaking on the achievement, the Mission Director of National Health Mission (NHM), Haryana, Dr. RS Dhillon said that institutional delivery in the state has reached 98.3% in 2024-25 (according to HMIS data), indicating better public confidence in government health services and widespread access to safe delivery.

Additionally, centrally sponsored schemes such as the Center Shishu Surksha Kayrakam (JSSK) and Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) are being implemented effectively. These programs ensure that pregnant women using public health facilities receive free medicines, clinical services, food, blood transfusion and referral transport. This initiative eliminates out-of-pocket expenses and increases access to healthcare for all.

The Health Department of Haryana is committed to improving maternal health results. Through strategic policies, strong infrastructure and community-focused programs, the state is making significant progress towards a healthy future for its continuous development goal (SDG) targets and all mothers.
