Naresh Arora calls Emergency “a dark chapter” in Indian democracy, says remembering June 25 is essential to safeguard constitutional values.

Chandigarh:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chandigarh spokesperson Naresh Arora strongly condemned the opposition by Congress leader Manish Bansal and some councillors from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding the Emergency Remembrance Programme. Calling the act “extremely unfortunate” and a “mockery of the suffering caused by the Emergency,” Arora said the BJP firmly denounces such protests.
“The Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, was one of the cruellest assaults on the soul of Indian democracy,” said Arora.
He added that during the 21-month-long Emergency, millions of innocent citizens were jailed without trial, press freedom was crushed, and the voice of the common man was silenced at gunpoint.
Arora emphasized that the remembrance event is not a political platform but a tribute to the countless families whose dreams and freedoms were destroyed during that dark era.
“Those who oppose this event perhaps never felt the tears, screams, and darkness of that time,” he remarked.
He clarified that the event is not against any specific political party, but a pledge that no government should ever again dare to crush democracy.
Calling it a lesson from history, Arora stated:

“It is essential that future generations understand the value of freedom of expression, which has come at a great cost.”
He asserted that the BJP considers it a duty to observe such remembrance days to uphold the dignity of the Constitution and democracy, and the party will neither be afraid of nor deterred by opposition to such commemorations.
