Mohali – In a unique initiative during Van Mahotsav, social organization Prayog Foundation launched a tree protection campaign at Government Middle Smart School, Bathlana, moving beyond traditional tree plantation drives. The students pledged to nurture the saplings into full-grown trees under the campaign titled ‘Selfie with Tree’.

During the event, Hardeep Singh Bathlana, Chairman of the District Youth Club Coordination Committee, emphasized that planting trees is not enough—caring for them is crucial. With the support of Prayog Foundation, over a dozen fruit-bearing saplings including jamun, mango, guava, and pomegranate were planted in the school premises.

Social worker Pooja Jaiswal shared that students will form pairs and adopt one plant each. For the next six months, they will care for their adopted plant and send a monthly selfie with the tree to the foundation. On 26th January (Republic Day), after an inspection, students who demonstrated outstanding care will be honored with a name plaque installed in front of their tree, serving as a lasting source of inspiration for future students.

Sanjeev Sharma, President of Prayog Foundation, stated that students of classes 7 and 8 have been entrusted with the responsibility of plant care. The initiative promotes environmental awareness, responsibility, and long-term engagement with nature.

The event was also attended by social worker Pawan Kumar, Bathlana village Sarpanch Harpal Singh, former Sarpanch Wazir Singh, and community members Giani Nirmal Singh, Baljit Singh, Mohan Singh (Contractor), Jarnail Singh, Surmukh Singh, Nagar Singh, and Manpreet Singh. Representatives of Prayog Foundation Mohali, Davinder Singh and Gursharan Singh, along with teachers Jaswinder Kaur, Abha Mehta, Mamta, Pooja, and Harpreet Kaur, were also present.

This campaign aims to instill environmental stewardship among students and spread the message that tree care is as important as planting.
