Union Home Ministry Transfers Senior IPS Officer Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda from Delhi to Chandigarh as Director General of Police

Chandigarh – In a significant administrative reshuffle, Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda, a 1997-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh, according to an official order from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
The ministry’s notification stated: “Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda, a 1997-batch AGMUT-cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is hereby transferred from Delhi to Chandigarh and posted as DGP with immediate effect until further orders.”
Before his appointment, Hooda was serving as the Special Commissioner with Delhi Police since January 2024. He has previously held multiple key positions, including Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) from January 2022 to January 2024, and Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi from February 2021 to February 2022.
Dr. Hooda brings a strong academic and administrative background to his new role. He is a distinguished Edward S. Mason Fellow from Harvard University, where he earned a Master’s in Public Policy Analysis (2014–2015). He also holds a certificate in Public Finance from Duke University (2012), and completed a Leadership and Globalisation Programme at the London School of Economics in 2006.

A native of academia, Hooda is also a PhD holder in Sociology from Panjab University (1991–1997), where he had earlier completed his MA in Sociology.
His appointment follows a period of interim leadership in Chandigarh Police. Inspector General Rajkumar Singh was serving as the acting DGP since April, following the transfer of Surendra Singh Yadav to the Border Security Force (BSF) as Deputy Inspector General.
Hooda’s appointment comes amid reports of internal tensions within Chandigarh’s police leadership and is seen as a step towards strengthening the city’s law enforcement structure.
