Appliance Repair Fraud Rises in Tricity, Senior Citizen Alleges Cheating

Men posing as Samsung technicians allegedly took microwave; complaint filed with SSP Mohali

Mohali, January 19, 2026:
Cases of domestic electrical appliance repair fraud are steadily increasing across the Tricity region, including Chandigarh and Mohali, with senior citizens emerging as particularly vulnerable targets. A fresh case has surfaced from Sector 70, Mohali, where a senior citizen has submitted a written complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali.

The complaint alleges that two individuals posing as authorized Samsung technicians took away the complainant’s Samsung microwave oven on the pretext of repair and subsequently disappeared.

Appliance Repair Fraud

According to the complaint, the senior citizen owns a Samsung microwave oven that developed a technical fault on December 6, 2025. While the heating function stopped working, other features of the appliance were operational. On the same day, he registered an online service request with Samsung Customer Care. Later that afternoon, a person identified as “Abhishek,” accompanied by another individual, arrived at his residence and claimed to be a Samsung representative.

After inspecting the appliance, the technicians allegedly claimed that the heating system was faulty and that the microwave would need to be taken to a service lab for repair. The repair cost was quoted at ₹4,000. Before taking the microwave, Abhishek reportedly spoke on the phone with a person identified as the service centre in-charge, Anmol Singh, and assured the complainant that the appliance would be repaired and returned the next day. Trusting the claim that the technicians were authorised Samsung representatives, the senior citizen allowed them to take the microwave.

However, after the microwave was taken away, repeated attempts by the complaint to contact the technician initially yielded no response. On one occasion, Abhishek answered the call and asked the complainant to collect the microwave from near Nijjar Chowk, Sunny Enclave, Kharar, at around 1:30 pm. After reaching the location, the complainant was made to wait for more than two hours, but no one turned up, and subsequent phone calls went unanswered.

Subsequent efforts to reach the alleged service centre in-charge, Anmol Singh, also failed. After informing Samsung Customer Care, the complainant received a call from the Samsung service centre in Mohali, where he was told that no employee named Abhishek was working with them.

As of January 19, the microwave has not been returned, and there has been no further contact from the accused. Subsequently, the senior citizen submitted a detailed written complaint to the SSP Mohali, providing the names and phone numbers of the alleged culprits and seeking legal action and recovery of his Samsung microwave.

The complainant has also requested the police to initiate action under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code, recover his microwave oven or provide adequate compensation, and take strict action against the accused to prevent similar incidents.

In his complaint, the senior citizen stated that the actions of the accused amounted to fraud, forgery, criminal breach of trust, and misappropriation of property, causing him financial loss and mental distress. The complaint noted, “Strict action should be taken against such individuals so that this heinous crime does not happen to anyone else.”

Police officials have assured the complainant that the matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken to curb the growing number of appliance repair fraud cases in the Tricity.
