Chandigarh: In an important step to increase the state fight against drug abuse, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced that the government would soon recruit 200 sociology professionals.
Newly recruited sociologists will play an important role in spreading awareness about drug addiction across the state, Cheema said. He also instructed the Health Department to improve staffing in government hospitals and expedite efforts to provide updated vacancy data.
Speaking about the government’s ongoing rift on drug smuggling, Cheema revealed that 16,348 arrests have been made so far, and officials have seized more than ₹ 11 crore drug money.
He said, “Our government is taking important steps to strengthen de-addition centers and ensure effective rehabilitation services,” he said.
Recruitment drives and healthcare staffing come as part of the AAP government’s widespread strategy to deal with drug abuse and improve public health infrastructure in Punjab.
