Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files trailer stopped in West Bengal; says, “Democracy is dead in Tagore and Vivekananda’s land”

On Saturday, the trailer launch of Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming and much-debated film The Bengal Files, which depicts the 1946 Calcutta communal riots, was halted at a luxury hotel in Kolkata. The move was met with little surprise, given the sensitive subject matter and the expected backlash. The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal is known for its strong stance on protecting the state’s minority community. Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files trailer stopped in West Bengal; says, “Democracy is dead in Tagore and Vivekananda’s land” A senior Trinamool leader, who is also a veteran actor, told this writer on condition of anonymity, “It is unlikely Agnihotri’s film will be released in West Bengal. He has a reputation for being a troublemaker. The Kashmir Files stirred up disturbing anti-Muslim sentiments. That won’t be allowed to happen here.” Responding to the incident, Vivek Agnihotri took to social media, tweeting, “With anguish I inform you: Today West Bengal police, on orders of ‘top authorities’, illegally stopped the trailer of #TheBengalFiles. First theatres, now even a private hotel.” Later, speaking further on the controversy, Agnihotri remarked, “Who fears the truth of Hindu genocide? And why? Democracy is dead in Tagore and Vivekananda’s land. The trailer is now being seen all over the country, but since it is based in Bengal, we wanted its launch here. They don’t want the atrocities on Bengali Hindus in 1946 and the fightback of people like Gopal Mukherjee to be shown in cinema. If it is a part of history, do you want to change history? There can be only one reason behind such a move — to ignore the conspiracy to divide Bengal again.” Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who essays the role of Mahatma Gandhi in The Bengal Files, also came forward in support of the film. Speaking exclusively to this writer, Kher said, “The Bengal Files tells only the truth. Veteran actor Anupam Kher has announced the launch of the Satish Kaushik Scholarship at his acting institute, Actor Prepares, in memory of his late friend and acclaimed actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik. Also a statue of the smiling #SatishKaushik will be installed in one of studios at the #ActingSchool! We do give scholarships from time to time to students but this is the First Time in 20 Years it is named after an individual. BRILLIANT ACTOR and an AMAZING HUMAN BEING and my BEST FRIEND!! Jai Ho!” Award Money Dedicated to Scholarship Anupam Kher had received the Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maharashtra Government on August 5, 2025, during the joint celebration of the 60th and 61st Maharashtra State Film Awards. The actor revealed that the prize money from this prestigious honour will fully fund the scholarship for a “deserving poor candidate” at his school. Tribute to Satish Kaushik Satish Kaushik, celebrated for his versatility in acting, writing, and direction, passed away on March 9, 2023. He shared a decades-long friendship with Anupam Kher, often referred to as one of his closest friends in the industry. In addition to the scholarship, Kher announced that a statue of Satish Kaushik, smiling as he was in life, will be installed in one of the studios at Actor Prepares. Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great declared tax-free in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday announced that Anupam Kher’s directorial Tanvi The Great will be made tax-free in the state. The decision comes after a special screening held in Bhopal, where CM Yadav watched it alongside the veteran actor-director. Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great declared tax-free in Madhya Pradesh “Today, I had the opportunity to watch the film Tanvi The Great with the renowned actor and director Shri @AnupamPKher ji in Bhopal. I announce that the film will be made tax-free in Madhya Pradesh,” Yadav said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The film, which features the story of an autistic girl navigating challenges and aspirations, has drawn attention for its subject matter. Speaking about the film’s impact, Yadav added, “This touching film, dedicated to the struggles, determination, and dreams of an autistic girl, inspires people to be more sensitive, humane, and compassionate towards such special children. While it is not uncommon for states to waive entertainment tax on films dealing with social issues, Tanvi The Great is among the few this year to receive such a status. With this move, Madhya Pradesh joins a growing list of states supporting films with social themes, particularly those spotlighting neurodiversity and inclusion.
