BJP Slams Kejriwal’s “Misleading” Claims on Chandigarh’s Status

Dr. Dharinder Tayal accuses AAP of using the Union Territory as a political tool while highlighting the party’s internal contradictions regarding the city’s future. The BJP Chandigarh chapter issued a sharp rebuttal against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday. Chief Spokesperson Dr. Dharinder Tayal labeled Kejriwal’s recent allegations about the city’s administrative future as “completely misleading.” Kejriwal previously alleged that the BJP intended to “snatch” Chandigarh from Punjab to benefit Haryana. However, Tayal dismissed these claims as politically motivated maneuvers. He emphasized that Chandigarh maintains a unique constitutional identity as a Union Territory that no party can simply “barter away.” Furthermore, Tayal argued that the city should never serve as a political bargaining chip during state elections. He stated, “Chandigarh is not an object to be ‘snatched’ or ‘given.’ It is a Union Territory with its own constitutional status and a unique identity.” Consequently, he urged AAP leadership to stop manufacturing panic among residents for electoral gains. Meanwhile, the BJP highlighted historical inconsistencies within AAP’s own ranks to expose alleged hypocrisy. Specifically, Tayal cited a proposal from April 5, 2022, made by AAP’s then Haryana in-charge, Sushil Gupta. At that time, the Rajya Sabha MP suggested dividing Chandigarh between Punjab and Haryana. In addition to this proposal, Gupta had suggested financial compensation for both states. Therefore, the BJP questions which version of AAP the public should believe. This contradiction suggests that the party views the Chandigarh status dispute through a lens of convenience rather than principle. Moreover, Tayal demanded immediate clarity from Kejriwal regarding these conflicting stances. He asked whether the party still supports the division of the city as proposed by its senior leaders. He noted that the sentiments of the city’s residents deserve more respect than selective political outrage. Ultimately, the BJP maintains that constitutional reality governs Chandigarh’s status. The spokesperson concluded that the region deserves honesty instead of fabricated narratives. As a result, the party called on AAP to focus on governance rather than spreading misinformation.

Experts Demand Cooling Infrastructure as Heatwaves Surge in Punjab

A multi-stakeholder workshop at Chandigarh Press Club highlights the urgent need to protect gig workers and farmers from rising temperatures. CHANDIGARH — Chandigarh recently hosted a critical workshop titled “Heatwaves in Punjab: Science, Health, and Social Awareness” at the local Press Club. Clean Air Punjab and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) collaborated to organize this timely event. Consequently, experts and activists gathered to address the escalating dangers of extreme heat. Sanam Sutirath Wazir, Director of Clean Air Punjab, opened the discussion with a powerful message. She stated that climate strategies must focus on the most vulnerable communities first. For instance, farmers and gig workers deal with extreme heat every single day. Therefore, simple awareness is no longer sufficient to protect them. “Systems for care and relief must be established at the local level,” Wazir emphasized. “These systems must incorporate cooling spaces and community support mechanisms to help those on the front lines.” Meanwhile, IMD scientist Shivinder Thakur highlighted the importance of scientific forecasting. He noted that heatwave patterns are changing rapidly across the region. Therefore, authorities must disseminate timely warnings to the public to prevent casualties. Furthermore, agriculture faces a significant threat from these rising temperatures. Dr. Prabhjyot Kaur from Punjab Agricultural University explained that heat damages soil quality and crop yields. Consequently, local farmers shared their personal struggles with maintaining livelihoods under a scorching sun. In addition, healthcare experts like Dr. A.K. Mandal warned of a surge in heat-related illnesses. These cases are currently placing immense pressure on local medical services. The workshop also highlighted the plight of the unorganized sector. Tech Chand, a Chandigarh gig worker, shared a chilling reality of his daily routine. He explained that outdoor laborers lack basic amenities like shade and accessible drinking water. “For workers like me, the heat is not merely an inconvenience; it can become life-threatening,” Tech Chand remarked. “We are often compelled to work under the sun for long hours without any relief.” Ultimately, the participants reached a clear consensus. They suggested that public buildings and religious sites should serve as temporary cooling shelters during peak summer. Combatting heatwaves in Punjab requires a strong synergy between science, policy, and community action. This collective effort will ensure the safety of the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

Chandigarh Sewerage Crisis Raises Health Concerns in Sector 15 Green Belt

Overflowing drains and foul air expose residents to health risks amid civic neglect. Chandigarh: Overflowing sewerage drains, polluted air and foul-smelling surroundings have become a grim reality for residents of Chandigarh, raising serious public health concerns and drawing attention to what locals describe as persistent civic negligence by the Municipal Corporation. Watch Video Short on Youtube: Chandigarh Sewerage Crisis Raises Health Concerns in Sector 15 Green Belt In the Sector 15 Green Belt, sewerage gutters constructed in what was once a pristine public space are now reflecting a deteriorating urban environment. Several sewerage drains have remained clogged for months, resulting in dirty water and sludge overflowing into green areas and nearby roads. The situation has forced residents to breathe polluted and toxic air on a daily basis. Morning walkers, senior citizens spending time in parks, and children at play are all being exposed to unhygienic conditions. What was once considered a healthy activity has now become a potential health hazard, as the stench and contamination continue unabated. Residents state that the Chandigarh sewerage crisis is not due to a lack of funds but stems from what they term a “grossly negligent working style” of the Municipal Corporation. Despite regular collection of various civic taxes from citizens, they allege that the return has been overflowing sewage, unbearable foul odor and an increasing risk of disease. According to local accounts, whenever one sewerage drain is opened or cleared, another nearby drain begins to overflow. The contaminated water flows through streets and lanes, polluting the entire environment. In cases where the main sewer line gets blocked, sewage reportedly enters residential houses directly, leading to choked domestic sewerage lines and damage to property. Residents question whether these conditions align with Chandigarh’s long-held identity as “The City Beautiful.” Conceived after the trauma of Partition, Chandigarh was envisioned as a symbol of modern planning, discipline and efficient administration. “When Chandigarh remained under direct administrative control, it was not just a city but a model for the nation,” locals recall. “Today, the same city appears to be sinking into silence marked by filth, blocked sewers and foul smells.” With growing population pressures and expanding civic responsibilities, residents argue that the city was created to showcase what a clean, modern and disciplined urban centre should look like—not to be reduced to a neglected political vote bank. Since the introduction of the Municipal Corporation system, citizens claim that Chandigarh’s cleanliness and aesthetic appeal are under threat, with dark clouds looming over the future of its public health and civic order.
