SHOCKING: Imran Khan recalls the time when his script was PLAGIARIZED: "I was powerless; they didn't know about my family; to them, I was just a kid off the street"

A big fear that plagues scriptwriters in our industry is that someone might plagiarize their script. Believe it or not, Imran Khan also went through a similar turmoil way back in 2005. The actor spoke about it in detail in an interview with Planet Bollywood. SHOCKING: Imran Khan recalls the time when his script was PLAGIARIZED: “I was powerless; they didn’t know about my family; to them, I was just a kid off the street” Imran Khan began by saying, “The incident about me taking a script to a channel and it getting stolen happened in early 2005. In the aftermath of that, I found I was completely powerless and could not catch hold of the guys who did this to me. I had gone into this meeting. It had been set up through contacts. These people had no context of my family relationships or background. To them, I was just a kid off the street. That is why they felt comfortable enough to lift my script. I was helpless and could not hold them accountable. I was very upset about it. If I had some name or recognition of my own, they might not have done this. To what extent that is true is a debatable point. I was 22 at that point.” Imran Khan further said, “I had spent a few months roaming the city and trying to find a position as an AD (assistant director). I had met a few people. One guy was working in the production department. He reached out to me and said that Abbas Tyrewala is making a film, and they are looking for new faces. They want you to come and audition for a part. I was aware of Abbas as I had seen his name on the credits of a few films I had liked. I had particularly appreciated his work as a lyricist. He had written lyrics for some songs I thought were very good. He had done some amount of screenwriting by then also. Since I recognized his name, I decided to meet him. We hit it off well in the very first meeting. I screen-tested for the part. Nandini Shrikent was the casting director of the film.” The film in question was Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008), which became his debut film. Isha Talwar recalls Shanoo Sharma’s “weird” audition request early in her career: “It shattered my confidence”

Popular Bollywood casting director Shanoo Sharma, known for discovering fresh talent for some of the industry’s biggest films, recently sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss her work on the newly released film Saiyaara. However, a post related to the interview sparked a wave of candid revelations from actors who have auditioned for her in the past. Isha Talwar recalls Shanoo Sharma’s “weird” audition request early in her career: “It shattered my confidence” Isha Talwar Recalls “Weird Ask” During Early Audition In the comments section of the post, actress Isha Talwar opened up about an unusual audition she was asked to perform early in her career. She recounted, “So when I started auditioning for roles with Shanoo… I was told to perform a scene at a restaurant called Mia Cucina in Versova, Bombay… a CRYING scene in the middle of a busy working restaurant with customers dining next to my table. I was told I should have no inhibitions as an actor and hence I should be able to do a crying scene with Shanoo sitting in front of me and some of her assistants… It was such a confusing/weird ask… it shattered my confidence as a young girl in films.” Talwar went on to say she felt an audition should be conducted in a proper casting space or, if required at a real location, one should be hired for the purpose. She added, “I do remember saying I can’t do it and of course I never got the role… but at least I didn’t give in to the weird ask and surely didn’t cry at a restaurant for a role!” Sharing her story “a decade later,” Talwar said she wanted newcomers to feel “no pressure” if faced with similar situations. Nidhi Subbaiah Echoes Concerns Over Audition Environment Another actress, Nidhi Subbaiah, also took to the comments to reflect on her own early experience with Sharma’s casting process. She wrote, “Shanoo is sweet but I’m not sure of her casting process. Was shunned and made fun of by her assistants when I’d gone for my first audition. They kept giggling about how different photos are from reality while pointing at a Miss India who was with me for that audition.” Shanoo Sharma has not yet responded publicly to these accounts. Vir Das REVEALS that he was offered Rs. 8 lakhs for his role in Love Aaj Kal: "I was the most EXPENSIVE background extra in history"

Vir Das had an interesting conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day where he spoke about many aspects, including his Bollywood career. At one point, he opened up on what made him take an inconsequential role in the Saif Ali Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal (2009). Vir Das REVEALS that he was offered Rs. 8 lakhs for his role in Love Aaj Kal: “I was the most EXPENSIVE background extra in history” Vir Das said, “I really needed cash as I was very cash-strapped. That’s when I was offered Love Aaj Kal. I was informed that I was required for just one scene and would be relegated to the background in other scenes. I said, ‘I’ll take it. I need money right now’. Director Imtiaz Ali, who’s a very nice guy and who had seen my stand-up act before, to his credit, warned me, ‘Vir, I am telling you. This is not much (of a role). This is just 1 or 2 scenes on paper and then you’ll be around’.” Explaining what his role was in the movie, Vir revealed, “If you watch, I have one scene in the movie and in the song ‘Can We Twist’, there’s a dude dancing on this side of Saif and there’s a dude dancing on that side of Saif. One is me and the other is Kavi Shastri, who’s now my co-director. We met on the sets of Love Aaj Kal.” When asked how much he was paid for it, Vir replied, “I was the most expensive background extra in history (laughs). I got put up in London and I got paid Rs. 8 lakhs, man!” He continued, “One of the two girls in Illuminati Productions was like, ‘We should have Vir in the movie’. So, somebody batted for me, after which Imtiaz was nice. Meanwhile, I had given auditions for Delhi Belly (2011) and Badmaash Company (2010) before I left to shoot for Love Aaj Kal in London. I was in London and was wondering, ‘What am I doing here? I am like the bouquet in the background’ (laughs)! Then my agent called me at 3 am and told me that I had bagged Delhi Belly. He told me, ‘I am going to get you a great deal’. I replied, ‘Do not negotiate. Whatever they offer, just take it’. I came straight out of Love Aaj Kal and shot for Delhi Belly after two months.” Also Read: SHOCKING: Vir Das on how life changed after ‘Two Indias’ controversy: “My phone was off for four months.
