Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone spoke at a session named ‘The Journey: From Outsider to Ruler’ on day 1 of WAVES Summit 2025. Moderated by Karan Johar, the session created waves (pun intended) thanks to SRK’s replies. Karan Johar told the audience, “Shah Rukh is the most awkward at a party. He likes to be in a corner. Try taking him to a departmental store or any kind of place where there are people; he’ll feel awkward. The same goes with Deepika.” SRK’s reply brought the house down.
WAVES 2025: Shah Rukh Khan reveals “Deepika Padukone is taller than me; I go to a party and hide behind her!”; shares a trick to avoid loneliness: “Make your children and parents happy and you’ll NEVER feel lonely in your life”
Shah Rukh Khan said, “There’s no duality. I love making people smile and make them happy. So, when I come on the stage, I can be very shy or awkward. That’s why I like Deepika because she is taller than me. So, I can go to a party and hide behind her!”
The superstar actually went behind Deepika to demonstrate. Deepika Padukone confirmed, “It’s true. He runs behind me and then I am running behind him.”
SRK continued, “It is strange that I am very shy. But with hundreds and thousands of people, I am very happy because I can bring happiness to them. But if I go to a private party, I don’t know how many people are going to get happy.”
He gave an instance, “Karan has fancy dress parties. He tells me, ‘The theme is gold’. Kahan se leke aaunga gold! Sometimes, the theme is shimmer or sizzle. Then, I feel like an outsider; like a penguin in a zoo in the wrong cage (laughs).”
He added, “Karan has lovely parties. We all know. If I attend his party and do this…” While talking, he did his signature pose. As expected, the crowd went crazy.
Shah Rukh Khan spoke about this craze reaction and said, “Wahan pe ek bhi aadmi nahin hai, jo aisa karega. Sab bolenge, ‘Yeh toh dekha hua hai. Yeh Shah Rukh kya kar raha hai’. This love (from the audience) makes me want to do things for them.”
At this point, people shouted ‘Once more’ as they demanded that SRK do the romantic pose again. SRK assured the attendees, “Bahut baar karunga. Yehi toh karna aata hai!” On a serious note, he said, “At parties, I meet strangers, known strangers. At public, I meet my own!”
Karan Johar then marvelled about how Shah Rukh Khan managed to take out time for his kids. Shah Rukh said, “I read somewhere, ‘The decision to have a child is to have a piece of your heart walk outside your body’! Mere paas teen hai – ek bada heart hai, ek medium heart hai aur ek chota heart hai!” He referred to his children, Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan and AbRam Khan.
SRK noted, “Karan asked about being lonely at the top. I want to tell everyone here whether you are young or childless and to those who have children. You’ll never be lonely if you can make your children laugh and those who don’t have children, if you make your parents laugh, you’ll never be lonely either!” As expected, there was a huge applause.
SRK added, “I am very funny for my kids. I have never scolded my kids ever. Deepika ko bhi nahin daata when she debuted in Om Shanti Om! I tell my kids sternly, ‘You have to sleep by 10:00 pm. Mumma has said it’. They troll me by saying, ‘Oh My God’, ‘S-R-K’, ‘Bete ko haath lagane se pehle…’. They do all this. I am the joke in my house but more important is the fact that I make my children happy, my family happy and my kids happy. And if you are young, make your parents happy. Then, you’ll never feel lonely in your life. That’s the trick!”
