Lifestyle Plays Vital Role in Liver Health: Dr. Rathore on World Hepatitis Day

Max Hospital Mohali expert emphasizes timely diagnosis, vaccination, and healthy habits to prevent liver complications

Mohali, July 28, 2025:
On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, Dr. Mukesh K. Rathore, Senior Consultant and Head of Gastroenterology at Max Hospital, Mohali, highlighted the silent yet serious threat posed by chronic liver diseases, particularly Hepatitis B and C.

Dr. Rathore explained that hepatitis has five main types — A, B, C, D, and E — each with distinct modes of transmission and severity. However, chronic Hepatitis B and C are especially dangerous as they often go undiagnosed until they have caused significant liver damage, leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

“Many patients remain unaware of the damage being done to their liver until the disease reaches an advanced stage,” Dr. Rathore said. He emphasized that alcohol consumption and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) continue to be major contributors to liver damage in India.

Vaccination, regular screening, and timely medical care are key to prevention, he added. “Vaccines for Hepatitis A and B are among our strongest tools of protection. With the availability of highly effective antiviral treatments, Hepatitis C is now curable in most cases,” he stated. Unfortunately, lack of awareness means many people remain untreated, increasing their risk of liver failure and cancer.

Dr. Rathore also stressed the importance of lifestyle choices in maintaining liver health. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and avoidance of alcohol and tobacco are critical steps to prevent liver-related complications.

Raising awareness, promoting early detection, and encouraging preventive care can significantly reduce the burden of chronic liver diseases, he concluded.
