As Andaz Apna Apna re-releases in theatres, designer Ashley Rebello opened up about his experience working on the iconic 1994 cult comedy, particularly designing the memorable look of Raveena Tandon for the song ‘Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Duri’, which also features the rest of the lead cast – Karisma Kapoor, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.
Andaz Apna Apna: Ashley Rebello reveals how Karisma Kapoor wanted the same ‘cult nightgown’ Raveena Tandon was wearing; says, “She would send somebody to see what Raveena was wearing”
Recalling those days, Rebello shared, “I was working with Preeti Sinha’s father Vinay Kumar Sinha. He was a damn sweet man. In those days, you had to work in tandem with the producer, the director, and of course, the actor. There were also three other main actors and several character actors involved. So, I remember the first thing I designed a nightgown for Raveena Tandon for the song ‘Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Duri’, and for that, I did two or three outfit changes for her as the sequences were spread across different parts of the night.”
Interestingly, Rebello also recalled an early connection with Karisma Kapoor during the making of the film, even though they had not formally worked together at the time. “So I didn’t know Karisma at all that time, but of course, later on, I worked with her in several films – that’s a whole different story. So, she would send somebody or the other to see what Raveena was wearing. Apparently, word had got around that Raveena’s look was stunning in that nightie. Raveena is a very attractive girl, and I think it was a yellow color nightgown that she wore in that song. So, at one point, someone even passed on a message from Karisma saying, ‘Wow, what a nightgown he has made, can he make something like that for me too? It was so much fun working on that film.”
Reflecting on the era, Rebello added, “Back then, it was common for everyone to do multiple films, so no one thought that this would be a cult film. But it was too much fun because we were all around the same age — either peers or younger, so working together was just easy and fun.”
Talking about the now-iconic outfit of Raveena Tandon, which has been synonymous with the film and the song, Rebello said, “The nightgown was the film’s highlight. Nobody had worn such a fancy nightgown. It had leaf embroidery and net layering and looked like a gown. People kept asking, ‘Who designed this? It’s beautiful.’ That was iconic for me.”
He also spoke about working alongside other noted designers. “Maybe just a jacket phase or two. But Anna Singh also did a lot of looks for her — we all worked together back then. There were so many looks, it’s hard to pick just one.”
Crediting the entire team’s natural sense of style for the film’s lasting fashion impact, Rebello added, “I think what made the film’s style so memorable was that everyone involved was truly stylish in real life and visually on par in terms of style. We all brought that international sensibility into our work. That made all the difference.”
Asked what he would change if he had the chance to style the film again, he said, “I wouldn’t change much. Loose jeans are back, sweatshirts are in. I’d just update the colour palette and maybe tweak the fit. I would give them the same T-shirts and jeans, and would make them look cool and very, very hip.”
Andaz Apna Apna, starring Salman Khan and Aamir Khan alongside Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Shakti Kapoor, continues to be celebrated for its timeless humor and iconic style.
