Filmmaker duo Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, best known for the romantic film Sanam Teri Kasam, recently opened up about their journey in the music video world. Speaking on the Hindi Rush Podcast, the two talked about discovering Shahid Kapoor and working with big stars like Salman Khan. Before making movies, Vinay and Radhika directed several music videos in the 1990s and early 2000s. One of their most well-known songs was ‘Aankhon Mein Tera Chehra.’ This is also the song that marked Shahid Kapoor’s first appearance on screen.

Vinay shared that they were looking for a new face for the song when choreographer Shiamak Davar recommended a student from his dance class. That student turned out to be Shahid Kapoor. “Shiamak told us, ‘This cute boy you’re looking for, he’s in my class,’” Vinay said. “So I went and saw Shahid dancing in the background.”
When Vinay told Radhika about Shahid, he described him as “a cute, urban Archie.” Radhika later learned that Shahid was the son of actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem. When she finally saw him perform, she was blown away. “He was so cute and such an amazing dancer,” she said.
The directors also spoke about how natural Shahid was in front of the camera. “Usually, we struggle in the edit room to find that perfect shot,” said Radhika. “But with Shahid, every take was fantastic.” One particular moment sealed the deal for them. “There’s a shot where the alarm rings and Shahid wakes up. Radhika saw that and said, ‘This boy is a superstar,’” Vinay recalled.
Radhika believes that some faces just work well on camera. “You can place the camera anywhere and they still look great,” she explained. She compared Shahid’s screen presence to that of Salman Khan. “With Salman sir, you don’t have to cheat angles. With Shahid, it was the same.”
Talking about Salman Khan, with whom they’ve worked many times, Radhika said directing him is a different experience. “You have to be alert. Salman sir is very smart — smarter than people think,” she said. According to her, Salman spends his day observing everything around him. “He catches things that even we sometimes miss.”
Radhika ended by saying, “If anyone tells you Salman sir is careless, it’s the biggest lie. He’s always thinking about films, stories, songs, and people.”
