In the tenth and last episode of The Filmy Hustle, hosted by distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap came together for the first time for an interview and as expected, they went down memory lane and raised interesting points on filmmaking like never before.
Anurag Kashyap reveals how Rangeela was a path-breaking film: “All the choreography that has followed since in Hindi films has EVOLVED from that film; it CHANGED the language of cinema; until then, everyone would write dialogues in Urdu…”
At the beginning, Anurag Kashyap revealed that he became a fan of Ram Gopal Varma when he watched Shiva (1990). “I saw Shiva on the second day of its release,” he said. “There was a poster with no hero’s face. It only had a hand with a cycle chain. We were blown away by the film. We saw the film three-four days in a row as all students from our hostel in Delhi would go and watch it again and again.”
Anruag then narrated his experience of watching RGV’s Rangeela (1995) saying, “Sriram Raghavan called me and told me to watch Rangeela with him at Anupam Theatre, Goregaon, Mumbai. Sriram had some setting with the staffer at Anupam. We literally sat on the stairs and saw Rangeela (laughs), that too first day first show.”
He continued, “We were blown by the film. It began with a song (‘Rangeela Re’); it had choreography that we had never seen before. All the choreography that has followed since in the Hindi film industry has evolved from there, barring one or two individual actors who insist on dancing in a certain way.”
Anurag Kashyap further stated, “I also believe one more thing and Ramu may disagree with me. Subconsciously or consciously, the language of cinema changed with Rangeela. Big credit goes to Ramu for getting Neeraj Vora and Sanjay Chhel (as writers). Until then, I was struggling as a writer. Everyone would write in Urdu. Actors spoke the language though they did not understand it. I remember Ramu telling me of an incident where some actor was arguing with him (over his lines in Rangeela). He said, ‘Ramu, this is not how dialogues are written’. Ramu replied, ‘But everybody is laughing, no? So, it works’! That was his logic!”
Anurag added, “If Sanjay Chhel and Neeraj Vora had not existed and had Rangeela had not existed, the spoken language of cinema would not have come in. I would not have existed!”
