Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt recently opened up about the controversial ‘A’ (adults only) certifications his films Ghulam and Awara Paagal Deewana received from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), shedding light on the censor board’s perceptions during an appearance on the Cyrus Says podcast, hosted by Cyrus Broacha. Known for his bold and boundary-pushing narratives, Bhatt’s reflections offer a glimpse into his filmmaking journey and the challenges he faced.

When asked if Awara Paagal Deewana—a 2002 comedy featuring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Aftab Shivdasani—was slapped with an ‘A’ certificate due to his reputation as a daring filmmaker, Bhatt humorously remarked, “The film came out 22 years ago, and in the story, Akshay Kumar’s sister dates Aftab, while his wife falls for Suniel Shetty. Maybe the censor board thought it was a lesson in adultery and that I was endorsing it.”
Bhatt also shared insights into the demands of directing, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance on set. “I have to remember everything because the set is like this, because questions are coming at you all the time, and some ridiculous ones,” he said.
Anticipation for Tumko Meri Kasam
Currently, Vikram Bhatt is gearing up for the release of his latest project, Tumko Meri Kasam, a film inspired by the real-life story of Dr. Ajay Murdia, the founder of Indira IVF. Speaking about the movie, Bhatt revealed, “Half of the film is about the journey of starting the IVF clinic, and the second half revolves around Anupam Kher, who plays Ajay, trying to get acquitted for a crime he did not commit.”
As Tumko Meri Kasam prepares for its release, fans and industry watchers are eager to see how Bhatt will once again blend real-life inspiration with cinematic storytelling.
